Thanks for the cautionary tale. I’m flying to DEL soon on an award ticket, and I was sorely tempted to route through PEK so I could fly UA’s new 77W in Polaris SFO>PEK. Unfortunately the next leg would’ve been on CA. While my itinerary wouldn’t have involved a domestic connection, opinions here seem to be nearly unanimous that CA premium cabin award flights carry risks: interminable transit queues, baggage mishaps, and ticketing problems.
Fortunately LH F opened up at T-14.

FYI, if the airport or lounge had Wi-Fi you might’ve been able to avoid those roaming fees by using Skype. It can call U.S. based 800 numbers for free even without a calling plan.
