I am not sure about this, there are plenty of CX flights leaving HKG after midnight and I fly quiet often on these post-midnight flights and the lounge hosts never ever said a word about it..... I mean it's normal for people on a flight departing at 00:50 to enter the lounge before midnight (indeed you are technically allowed to enter at 5AM or so when departing on a 00:50 flight).

QRC2388 points out it has to do with the connection, not the original flight. When taking advantage of the connecting flight rule the boarding passes are usually scanned and give the green light. A flight which is technically the second day may not get that approval, hence the need for an override.
