Well, since it's a benefit of the US card it's not super surprising that they only have US airlines as a choice. Also if it's too difficult to select an airline and buy a gift card, there is no obligation to use the travel credit.
Takes me all of about 5 minutes per year to use up my $200 travel credit in the years I've had my Platinum card. Obviously 0 minutes would be preferred, but it's really no big deal, IMO.
