How did "Radisson" in the United States come to represent only hotels that are dying?

Any historians who can shed a light on this one?

A Radisson in the US is a hotel that hasn't recently been renovated and used to be a more illustrious brand. If a hotel renovates, it usually leaves Radisson and takes on a non-garbage fire brand. (Most recent case in point: Newport Beach.)

How did this come to be?
