They've always said that. I know two people that have tried on a non-A departure and not had a problem. I suspect it's more of a comment on the fact that the lounge is behind security and the terminals are not connected - however CSA at SFO have allowed access to any terminal with a valid BP for a very long time, just means you need to clear security twice.
