Every time I go for a retention offer w/ AMEX (or Chase) it is before I close a card I actually do not use. And there is a reason I do not use it... And because I do not use it, I do not get a retention offer. Tried this a month ago when I closed out my Delta Gold AMEX I never use because I have a Delta Platinum (which will be closed in January!).
It's just interesting to me because I spend a lot with AMEX in general currently and over the past 10 years, just on different cards like SPG. But clearly they seem to look at things black and white, per card. I mean it's pretty obvious why they aren't rushing to keep me if I am not using a card, but at the same time there has to be lots of customers who have multiple cards and are good customers to the bank overall, but where the bank also wants to have someone keep an additional card by throwing them a retention offer bone.
Maybe I should up my game and call when the renewal hits on cards I actually want to keep AND spend on, but I can't be bothered really calling in to bluff on canceling.
