It's in the small print of your rental agreement issued at time of pick up -
blah,blah,blah.... "pay my rental charges in my home currency"

I'll ask at the desk next time to see if this can be overridden.

btw - they also charge 5 Euro to use a credit card - adding insult to injury. There is a separate thread about this somewhere.
