Avoiding high fares for 11 month stay in Europe?

Some friends of mine are going on a sabatical and have asked me to look into fares. Problem is that the return fares won't be published in the CRS until after they've left. I thought of oneways, which are quite inexpensive, but I believe that they need a return ticket to arrive in the country.

The details:
YYZ (or BUF) to GLA on 28 Aug-1 September.
they will get to paris on their own
return from Paris on 25-31 July 2005.

Two adults, 2 children under 10.

Suppose an option could be purchasing the oneway to GLA and the GLA-CDG ticket immediately, thereby having a ticket out of the country upon arrival in GLA, and then purchasing a one way CDG-YYZ when the fares are published but before flying to Paris. But that of course is quite risky, because if the airline that does cheap oneways ceases to fly that route, they could be up the creek (I'm thinking Zoom for Toronto departures).

Any other stratagies?
