Similarly on UA145 ORD-SFO, I see 14E reserved while 14 D and F are available. (Though in this case 13DEF and 15DEF are all taken, so it could be a split).
I can't imagine why anyone would want to reserve the middle seat only

I ran into this once. Somebody does not understand UA elite policy of blocking seats. They think if the sit in the middle both the seats on either side of them will be blocked, when in reality, UA will not block a window or Aisle seat but only a middle and don't always expect that in the exit row.
