Well, if all else fails, I'll contact customer service to see if they can manually post the promo miles. There's nothing in the promo rules prohibiting connections or "direct" flights. I have screenshots of the confirmation page that show LAX-SFO-BOS with seat assignments so hopefully they see it the way I do!
