Yes. If you're not cleared at T-24, and there's ZN>=2, you'll be offered a $299 upgrade for the two of you. If ZN>=2, and no offer appears, call in and ask for Web Support, who'll get it done for you. Miles will be refunded.
If you clear prior to T-24, and want to take the $299 offer, you'll need to get an agent to downgrade you to Y, then check in and take the offer. That requires both S>=2, since you'll be going back down from R to S, and also ZN>=2, since you'll need ZN to get the cash upgrade offer.
So, if you want to sit in J and only have a mild preference for all-cash vs miles, I would waitlist now. If you think the MUA is too high and you'd only want the $299 offer, hold off for now, as there's a risk your miles upgrade will clear and you won't be able to "replace" it with an all-cash upgrade. IMO you should want to sit in J for a journey like this and so you should just WL.
