There is or was a law passed after 9/11. Another carrier would probably take your ticket and a small fee and allow you to standby.

That said, it's a $400 walkup fare from BWI to FLL on LUV. Even if US went out of business on the day before your trip, you would not necessarily have to destroy the bank to still make it.
