I always look forward to staying in even the most basic HI Express or equivalent in Europe. The breakfast is always miles ahead of the processed garbage served on styrofoam that I'm used to in the U.S. Most recent experience was in Düsseldorf - forgettable looking property on the outside, but clean and modern rooms, nice bar in lobby, and a breakfast spread that would shame pretty much any full-service hotel breakfast in the U.S.
My GF still raves about the breakfast at the HI Express in Nuremberg, with farm-fresh eggs and delicious meats. The HIX breakfasts in Amsterdam, Paris, and London were also excellent. We won't touch the US stuff!
