I have also had this happen only once, SFO-ORD. I was traveling for business so had paid for MCS (not my money), and am VX Gold -- so probably the combination of status and highest-paid fare in the main cabin. After I was seated, a flight attendant came up to me with a new ticket for 2A and asked if I "wouldn't mind" moving to F. I was the only person upgraded to F; the seat next to me (2C) remained empty. I felt bad for my colleague (a UA flyer with no VX status) whom I left stranded in row 3, but not *too* bad.
