I couldn't find Emirates tickets through the Japan Airlines website so I called them. They were nice and booked HAN > DBX > MUC. I asked how much the fees were and the man said it should be something under $300. Fine with me. He also said there is no going back, and all charges are final. If I want to cancel or change the flight there are fees.

Just checked my credit card and have been charged $850 in fees which I think is outrageous. I have no idea what the allocation of the fees are to (I'm assuming fuel or airport taxes...) Had I known this, I would have just purchased a standard ticket which runs $800, and saved the points.

My question is: what are my options at this point??? I know I can't transfer JAL points back to SPG so I'm stuck with JAL points. But if I'm using points, I don't want to be paying more than $300 in fees.
Seems a bit strange as well and I would also be upset. Looks like from their website that you could cancel the award and have your miles redeposited for a fee of 3,100 Y. Which I think is around $30. You might be able to get that waived if you try and plead your case. And remember, be very polite, and if it doesn't work on the 1st try, call back and try again. I had issues changing a ticket with JAL on an award. Called back and talked to a different rep and had no problem??

Here is their policy.
