AS the OP here, I feel I need to intervene. I was not in any way, shape, or form advocating for "bending" rules. I asked specifically about a tablet (HP Elite X2), and how it is interpreted vs an iPad PRO which is nearly identical.

HP Elite X2

iPad Pro 12.9

Both units are "Tablets" which are explicitly allowed by both United and the FAA. Both units are under 2.0lbs (the number several have brought up here, but I can't find a source for).

There is no rule bending involved, or implied.
The question really is more about how FAs interpret the rule. On a frequent flyer board where HUCA (Hang up and call again) is one of the most frequently used acronyms... we all know that United employees often don't interpret the rules in a uniform fashion.
