Ldnn1, but that is exactly what I thought and tried initially, only to be told immediately by the Avios agent that she saw that it was a voucher booking, which could not be upgraded. I suppose I could try HUACA, but it seemed immediately obvious in the booking.

No. But have you actually tried calling Avios to see if they could change to F? As I understand it they don't necessarily see the voucher once used, what they see is you have a J avios booking. Thus it's possible they may just quote the difference in price from J to F. Worth a try.
