However, you generally don't get huge complaints on wide open flights, because you get to the gate, explain what happened, and they put you back on.

Except here the GA said "they couldn't do anything". Was it overbooked, had they been offloaded? Standby is cleared just before boarding in my limited experience, is it an IDB if I turn up at t-35 and my seat just went to a non status Y passenger? I'm assuming AC wouldn't go on board and kick the guy off (assuming s/he has somehow made it onto a plane 35 mins before departure sitting in Zone 3-5).
