Introduction We visited Point Yamu over our anniversary this June. The trip was doubly special as it marked our first holiday after a rather complicated spinal surgery for my wife. As such we were quite apprehensive about where we would end up staying, considering she was dealing with mobility issues.Thankfully, Point Yamu came a cropper and made for a flawless stay. We give it a very high rating indeed, and think it matched up to our previous high at The Datai in Langkawi. Booking This was a mix of emails (to check our room choice for accessibility and views), and online booking (on their site). Overall, it was a quick and easy process, and our email contact made sure to give us sufficient detail. Transfers We requested this online, opting for the cheapest option, a Toyota Camry. This is around 40-50 percent more expensive than a local taxi, but it saved us the hassle of finding one at the airport - especially taxing after an overnight flight and with a spouse in a wheelchair. Our request was executed rather well. We were met by a infectiously cheerful hotel representative in the arrivals hall, and she quickly took care of all our luggage and guided us to our upgraded transfer - a rather comfortable Mercedes Benz S-Class. The drive was around 40 minutes, but very smooth - we almost fell asleep. Cold drinking water and wet towels were provided, and the driver also offered to make a stop at a convenience store if we needed. Location On the quiet east coast of Phuket, away from the party beaches but right next to the jaw droppingly beautiful Phang Nga bay. The surroundings are far more authentically Thai and especially quiet. Furthermore, the hotel itself sits on a peninsula and offers unhindered views all around. Sadly, there isn't a beach en site, but there is an island beach club in the bay, which can be accessed by complimentary scheduled long tail boat rides. We did not opt for this though, as the transfer wasn't suitable for my wife. At any rate, we booked primarily for views of the bay from the hotel, and were not disappointed. We rather loved this setting. However, guests who like a little more activity should give Point Yamu's location greater thought - anything else of note is a taxi ride away. Check In Smooth and efficient. Staff (and a wheelchair) was waiting for us on arrival. A representative checked us in with minimal fuss, and plied us with a welcome drink and a beautiful flower bracelet. She also upgraded us to a Bay Pool Suite (we had booked a Bay Pool Room), saying that my wife would more comfortable with the extra space.

Room Our Bay Pool Suite was subliminally beautiful. Light, airy, expansive, well equipped, and with a view to die for. You'll find photos and descriptions online, so I won't bother with that detail. All I'll say is that its prettier in real life, and amazingly comfortable. If you want something cheaper, then the non-pool rooms and suites work well too. The main pool more than compensates for not having a private one.If you want something more expensive, then the villas are your oyster. Service Relaxed yet efficient, with especially warm staff. They were very attentive, but not pretentious or pitiful in the least - both attributes we really appreciated. Also, the upgrades gave them extra brownie points.

Dining Quite good, but overpriced. Nahm Yaa serves excellent Thai food, but at rather inflated prices. The staff there, however, is a real winner. La Sirena's breakfast is quite ample, but suffers from a rather strict 11 AM curfew. Their lunch and dinner setup is a bit less impressive though, and we found the pizzas to be a bit hit and miss. In-room dining was quite good - quick, warm, and well presented - and offered an interesting selection of health conscious foods from the Shambha La wellness centre. The bar by the pool is decent and has great views. Facilities For a hotel with less than 100 units, there is plenty on offer at Point Yamu - complimentary daily activities, freebies by the pool, a fully equipped activities centre, an island beach club, and one of the world's best rated spas. We, however, confined ourselves to our beautiful pool - but it was nice to know there were many other options. Design The aesthetic is rather stark, and far removed from the typical Thai look. However, it worked very well and was especially suitable for a mobility impaired guest. The look is cutting edge, industrial inspired contemporary with a hint of traditional, and works rather well when it comes to framing the amazing views all around. The main pool deserves a special mention. The details are very well thought out, and every corner of the hotel is an instagram upload waiting to happen. Paolo Navone has done an especially good job here. Ambience Relaxed and casual, and fairly private despite its industrial look. The only time we saw other guests was at meal times. Most guests are well heeled Asians, and there are more than a few social media addicts around, making for a rather amusing day spent by the pool. But its a generally quiet place with a good mix of groups, couples, and families - there's something to suit all tastes. Value Considering our upgrades, we'd give Point Yamu a top rating for value. Even if there were no upgrades, we'd give it a great rating because of the view, the look, and the service. Overall Excellent and worth repeating.
