I've booked one hotel via Japanican and they did take my credit card and charge it already, I think it's because it was for a special pay in advance type of rate. But I also booked a ryokan in Noboribetsu (Kashotei Hanaya) and for that I booked direct on the hotel's own website and they did not collect credit card info yet have a cancellation policy/fees.
