IME, ANA lounge receptionists & gate agents all carry a mini-notebook (cheatsheet?) which is usually chained to their uniform. If you ask them anything out of the ordinary (e.g. where is the lavatory) in most cases they have to refer to their notebook to get the most elementary computer formats. Are they so poorly trained or can they not remember the computer formats?
in a lifetime not so long ago i tried listing on ana as a non rev with an other star alliance carrier in possession of a paper ticket. but nh uses e tickets. and you have to list online and not at airport. i was sure ticked off and disappointed this poorly trained agent spent 20 seconds going thru his notebook and locating the commands to be inputted in res so i could get listed and the res could be processed with a paper (ticket) pull at the gate. this took an excruciating 90 seconds. i much rather would have preferred the us airline customer service approach of throwing up one's arms, saying it is impossible and nothing can be done, roll the eyes when get pushed back ("uh so you're telling me i'm stranded because you don't know how to do this?"), dip the shoulders and neck snap when they realize you're not leaving the counter easily, begrudgingly call support, and having the agent stand arms crossed, passive aggressively staring blankly at a 30 degree angle downwards while waiting on hold for 20 minutes just to get a more senior agent over the phone to tell himher what 8 character command to type in just 5 seconds, only that himher will forget what they were told 5 minutes later, leading to this situation having to happen again the next time this happens with someone else the following week.
yeah those nh agents are such rookies with their notebooks..this reminds me of the wise words a sfo ua agent once told me. and i quote: "

"
but your point is taken on japanese workers always double triple checking even the most rudimentary routine things they know deep down how to do. that was my struggle for 2 years while running a bidness there.
