Have you been to NZ before? Any particular reason you want to go to Wellington?
If you can't drive I would suggest spending 3 nights in Queenstown instead of Wellington. Auckland you are kind of stuck with so might as well check it out and do some day trips from there, but you can fill half the trip with a short flight to the south island.
Lots of information in the forum about Auckland and Queenstown, since you haven't really given any clue as to what type of activities you like, maybe just peruse those threads.
I enjoyed my one day in Wellington and wish I had had the time to spend an additional 1-2 nights in the city. That said, if you want to see some of the gorgeous outdoors in NZ (as well as some of the adventure), I second the opinion of flying down to ZQN.
Personally, I would do 2 nights each in Auckland, Wellington, and Queenstown. Do Auckland on the 21st and 22nd, fly to Wellington on the 23rd, and then fly WLG-ZQN morning of the 25th, and then ZQN-AKL on the 27th. Outside of WLG-ZQN, which only has 2 daily nonstops on NZ, the other legs (AKL-WLG and ZQN-AKL) have lots of frequencies.
