They point blank won't do that.

Years ago I booked a direct flight YYZ-NRT which I had flown a number of times before. They ended up changing the flight to a one stop flight YYZ-YVR-NRT (all on AC 001). Airport was jammed (Christmas period). I was not thinking clearly and lined up for an hour at the Intl departures check in desks only to get to the front and be brusquely told that I needed to hoof it to the domestic check in counter for my AC 001 flight.

Can't tell you how overjoyed I was to spend another hour in line at another check in counter. Had no status, so I was at the bottom of the pecking order. It's no wonder the once every few years flyer feels totally confused at the airport.
