refund for weather delay?
Need some feedback here. Due to UA denying me boarding (see United forum), I purchased a walk up ticket on HP to fly DFW-LAS-SEA. Due to thunderstorm activity, the 6:30pm DFW-LAS departure time kept getting pushed back, and the flight eventually left at 11:30pm.
When it became clear that I was going to miss the last LAS-SEA flight of the night (the 11:59pm flight), I bought a new full fare ticket on AA (4x the price of HP) so that I could get back to SEA that night, because the next HP flight would not arrive til noon.
Since the HP counter at DFW was mobbed, I called HP to cancel my ticket and was told my ticket was non refundable, even though I was going to misconnect and arrive into SEA over 14 hours late. They offered to waive the change fee, but not refund the ticket.
Given that I spent money to reroute myself on another carrier, and that HP could not honor the ticket I purchased, and that I did not intend to have an overnight delay, I feel that it is only fair that I get a full refund.
HP is unwilling to budge, so I am thinking of doing a chargeback through American Express. At the same time, I know I may be stuck because it was a weather delay, but if an airline cannot fly you on the flights you are ticketed for (i.e. due to the misconnect, I was not able to travel on my ticketed LAS-SEA), aren't you entitled to a refund?
Let me know your thoughts.
