One final thought - do you think my mom should just fly out of Nelson or should we make it over to Picton, ferry across to Wellington, maybe enjoy a day there, then she flies home from there? Or just stick strictly to the south island?

When I went due to bad planning I had to very much rush through Wellington. The ferry across is nice. Just not sure if that whole bit is worth the extra day(s) + planning?

Also I know sometimes the seas can be rough - in the Jan/Feb timeframe could it be possible that ferries would be canceled, we couldn't get across, and she couldn't catch her flight?
