Wanaka is no that far from Queenstown (~70 km 1:15hr by shortest distance ). If you have been to Queenstown more of a stop for a few hours/coffee break or overnight and keep driving. You can go via Arrowtown for a change of scenery.
A lot of NZer's stay in Wanaka as its not such a tourist trap and more affordable than Queenstown.
