It might not be a 'true' luxury hotel in terms of service or price point but the Heritage wing is partly housed in the former Reserve Bank of South Africa and the lobby retains some of its historical features. So certainly didn't feel like a big box hotel on my stay in July.
The decor was traditional, which I appreciate, and things like a subtle pattern on the linens and print of the carpet showed an attention to detail.
As I was visiting in winter an indoor pool was preferable and wonderfully warm!
Thanks for sharing your perspective on the Taj Cape Town--though those photos of the tiny staircase and dated bed and window coverings serve to reinforce my impression of a hotel past its prime. Your statement that the Taj "might not be a 'true' luxury hotel" is just restating my observation that it is a "sub-luxury" property. It feels like we are more in agreement, actually!
