BA isn't pretending a law means something; it does mean it, and quite seriously too. They don't always get it right, but if they are to make mistakes, personally I'd rather they err on the side of compliance than failure.
If BA has not been notified that you are authorized to access someone else's PNR, BA should not be acting on any requests on your behalf, even if you already know all the details that BA are protecting.
There isn't anything wrong with you knowing the details already, but BA cannot do anything that would confirm what you already know without permission of the data subject.
Just get added as an authorized 3rd party and go from there. Annoying, yes, but it protects you too; it could be your own data being accessed without permission next time.
