Hyatt Gift Card fraud
Hi,
I have multiple times, bought discounted Hyatt GC from resellers and had them ZERO when I went to use them. Usually not a high failure rate, but a concern.
Most recent round was the worst, bought 8 GC on CashCard.com August 23rd. Attempted to use them on September 6th for a large bill.
3 worked, 5 did not. Worst ratio ever!
All 5 that did not work, had a PIN of 0000. I called Hyatt, and got routed to the 3rd party company that actually does processing, and the example number I gave the rep had been used August 25th, a mere 2 days after I bought it. While I was on the phone I asked Hyatt if I could change the PIN on a fresh GC to protect it, they said no.
Now while I can get a refund from CashCard since I'm within their 45-day guarantee (this time), it's still a foregone savings. I had to pay Hyatt with my CC instead of the discount GC I was intending to use. I would not buy "extra" GC on the assumption some will be bad, since then I might be stuck holding inventory that might live past it's 45-day window.
Does anyone understand how these fraudsters operate?
My guess would be, that they are not using these for themselves or their friends. Rather, I think they are simply reselling the SAME GC multiple times through different outlets. Buy a $100 GC, sell it 3 times for $80, $140 pure profit. They are the primary winner. The buyers are in a blind race, the first one to spend it is a secondary winner. That person actually got the discount! The other 2 lose.
Is there any repercussions to the sellers? I'm sure they can cancel that login, but big deal they create another one. Can the resellers backcharge them or something to penalize them?
All thoughts welcome.
