To be clear, the lowest published one-day price on RSW-CLE for travel tomorrow is $512 (and was also $512 on Thursday, June 8). Unfortunately, there's no E availability due to the inventory issues. The Y fares I saw were $1153 in June and $1183 now. $1800 sounds like a broken fare; the routing rules for FMY-CLE allow for a short hop on a Silver codeshare and then a stop in WAS/EWR/CHI. Anything going through IAH would be a broken fare, as well as anything taking two non-Silver stops (e.g., RSW-IAD-EWR-CLE).
I didn't check nearby airports, I just clicked around on Google Flights for a few minutes. If that AA flight didn't work out for him, you might want to try the same.
