Yes, there are those that ask for UGs and find it acceptable to do so. Personally I find it gauche, especially when checking in. In over fifteen hundred stays I haven't done it. It's not surprising when someone who demands an UG based on status finds other rules strictly enforced. Bravo to the hotel employees on that.
