United has already done a "roll-back" and it matches what people having been noting in the BE thread on FT (which this perhaps ought to be moved to). As the presentation by Levy says:
New product was rolled out broadly in domestic system at the end of May
However, we underappreciated that incremental revenue from buy-up would be more than offset by share loss to legacy carriers without similar Basic Economy offering
We have adjusted our approach by:
Scaling back breadth of offering to a portion of our domestic network
Offering Basic Economy only in the bottom five fare classes instead of entire fare ladder
Varying buy-up levels depending on competitive landscape
United still have the worst/crappiest/most "stick it to elites" version of BE, they are just now not offering it on some flights, and not ever doing it above the bottom 5 fare buckets. Still not competitive, still bull headed and bad decisions, just not quite as bad.
