Also, I should add that the Gold line doesn't announce itself as the Gold line when you call it. It sounds the same as the regular line, save that they pick up the phone quicker (i.e. to an ordinarily acceptable service standard), usually goes through to a UK centre (rather than India) and they will politely enquire about your BAEC number before helping you (if it's not evident from a booking reference that you've already provided). I can see why a Gold member might think that you were being put through the normal line.
When calling the 0800 number, it says Welcome to the British Airways Executive Club for Gold Members. No idea on any other number, as I use the same number from abroad anyway.
