This has never happened to me at Accor, as I believe the Platinum members will be the last ones to be bumped, but it has happened to me in a Crowne Plaza once.
And yes, it does happen, as with airlines. Nothing wrong in your case as the Sofitel is a nice alternative. Whether they will go the extra mile is entirely on them. Please report here
