BA -> Qantas Program Transfer

Hi, I'm a new poster, hope someone can help me out.

I'm a BA silver club member, requiring 235 points to get to Gold before next March.

I have just relocated to Sydney (will be here 3 years minimum) and the majority of my business travel will be with Qantas. I will fly multiple times a year to Perth and China/HK.

I obviously receive tier points and avios with these Qantas flights, but at a reduced rate. I get the same number of Tier points, but far reduced Avios.

My question is, does it make sense for me to continue accumulating points through my BA account at a reduced rate, or should I join Qantas frequent flyer?

I don't think I can use avios here that easily, so Qantas benefits will probably be preferable, but I don't want to lose my BA progress. Perhaps I should accumulate through BA until I reach Gold (which will be soon) and then request a status match? What is the equivalent Qantas status to BA Gold (assume it is Gold but there are a couple of platinum tiers as well).

Would appreciate any advice on how to optimise this situation from anyone who knows both programs.
Thanks
