This airport really is in the middle of nowhere. I took a few flights there last month and you need to drive through tiny little towns on backs roads for about 10 miles just to get to the highway. I was told by a colleague that it was built there due to Tyson and Walmart's proximity. They have a direct flight to EWR daily, while FSM serving the second lagest city in Arkansas 80 miles south does not. I have given up flying out of it as the drive from Fort Smith is a PITA.
Incidentally, it is a nice airport as these things go, but it reminds me of that little "international" airport in Knock in the west of Ireland that was built after lobbying from the catholic church. The only thing of interest in the immediate area is a religous shrine.
