Are you calling Platinum Travel Service 0845 608 0845, rather than American Express Travel Services:
I was using the concierge number and then choice 1 for travels (2 is concierge and 3 insurance). I will give a try to this number next time.

I agree it's better to book direct if the price is the same.
I use their website only for flights I'm certain of. The main advantages are that amex travel isn't charging CC fees UK websites usually charge and I'm getting more MR points (2MR per £ instead of 1).
