I hope that you're not confusing the 30-day unlimited Airtrain Metrocard ($40) with the regular 30-day unlimited Metrocard ($70). The unlimited Airtrain Metrocard is valid ONLY on the Airtrain, and not on the NYC subways or buses. Conversely, the regular 30-day unlimited Metrocard is valid ONLY on the subways and buses, and NOT on AirTrain.
You don't need to buy any Metrocard before boarding AirTrain at JFK; fares are only collected at either the Jamaica or Howard Beach AirTrain stations, and both stations have Metrocard vending machines which sell both types of unlimited Metrocards, as well as the regular pay-per-ride Metrocards.
