Many people who can afford 10 nights at CB want what they booked, not a hassle of jumping around to save $40K. I am in the latter, but I know many people who would rather just have what they booked.
I would jump around quite a bit for $40k, and can afford a CBR stay. Then again my time is not valuable or limited, usually.
But I rather do not understand your point. Of course someone booking CBR wanted to stay there, then it was bought out, so guest did not pay AND was more than generously compensated. It doesn't matter what anyone
wanted, CBR is a business, and like any hotel they reserve the right to cancel reservations for any reason, including prepaid bookings.
