Are there other benefits to the JWD recipient besides the $5 or whatever cash-equivalent? Because the phone agents I have given codes to have all been extremely appreciative in a way that seems slightly disproportionate to a small cash amount. (I've given a couple out in person as well but one was to a GA literally as we were passing in the jetway, and the others to FAs who seemed appreciative but not as gushingly as the phone agents.)
Phone agents don't get them as often. The $ amount isn't what's nice, but it really is nice when a high value customer genuinely appreciates what you've done.
Ditto for supervisor compliments. If anything, they're more valuable, and can help the agent get a higher priority when traveling standby.
