Update: I had an award flight LAX-AKL (and then on to australia).
I was rebooked in Business LAX-SYD
I am an AA exec plat (not sure if it mattered or not)
It took four phone calls and two weeks "on request" but I finally got our AKL-SYD-LAX-East Coast return flight ticketed, first flight QF metal then AA.
