I have not heard of people getting elite status on a BP when they don't have it. The known issue with upgrades on AM is that they tend to not automatically clear, but DL medallions have reported success from simply asking the AM gate agent, or even calling in a few days in advance. Whether or not they think you have status is something you will find out when you ask.
