Hakone, Yugawara, Atami, Ito, Shuzenji, Gero, etc, etc. There're so many places. Every one of these places is not directly en route per se, if you're taking the bullet train (as jib says). I don't know who told you Hakone is outdated, but I disagree. Hakone is the best out of what I listed above, imo. Then again, Hakone has many areas (Yumoto, Miyanoshita, Goura, Sengokuhara), and crappy hotels and exquisite places. Some Hikari bullet trains (but not most) stop at Odawara Station and then it's anywhere from probably 20min~90min from there to your lodging. If you reconsider Hakone and are interested, do a search. Hakone has been discussed many times on this forum.
