Called up ANA in Japan last night (only one open at the time) and after an hour of two agents plus back-and-forth with supervisor, finally managed to convince them to give me a full refund (it was a P fare) - didn't want to switch to go through SEA (not convenient for me this time) but they didn't offer it either (like cape dreamer, they wanted. It was pulling teeth though. I called LA's ANA desk this afternoon and they confirmed the refund was in progress which the LA agent said she would expedite.
One note: the second ANA Japan agent said that the switch is due to removal of PE service from YVR-HND so only two classes, hence the 788. I told her and the LA agent too that it is not just a switch of aircraft. ANA Canada's page was advertising for the longest time all the benefits of the 789 (lie-flat, privacy, WiFi) and now they've pulled that all away; it's a complete change of what I paid for.
Not looking forward to having this argument in two months time for my next ANA flight scheduled for early 2018...

Interesting that your flight is in November. At one point, they tried to convince me to change my return from Oct 28 to Oct 29, because the equipment change was only effective through Oct 28. Glad I didn't take them up on that offer since it looks like they've now made this a longer-term change.
