If it's the last leg and your friend has flown the previous sectors, then subject to any pricing oddity on the fare rules that I don't know about, there should be no charge to just cancel the last sector. Your friend can ring up and ask about that without commitment.
He did call and was eventually (he has no status so general enquiries number) told that there would be a change fee... that might be incorrect.
Looks like client has changed their mind anyway and so he will be coming back to SYD but good to know that it's a real pain if not HBO.
