DL retired the type twice actually. Once before the NW merger, once afterwards, having inherited the NW fleet.
I flew on one of those birds that was going between ORD and ATL just before it was retired. That was fun.

Old airframes are not inherently unsafe. It is all about inspections (cycles) and maintenance. There are B-52 that are 50+ years old that are still flying.
