AC never cleans their planes, part 1000. Groomers don't check seat pockets, under seats, or tray tables, they just dust off the seat cushion (if that). It must be AC SOP provided by AC to their cleaning contractor. When AC management orders them not to take 10 extra seconds per seat to check for this stuff, they know that once in a while, a situation like yours (or "used" airsickness bag in the seat pocket, or a sticky food spill on the tray table, etc etc) will happen.
