Consider yourself lucky. I had my bag damaged on CLT-ORD flight. I gate checked it and when they brought it to the jet bridge at ORD via the luggage elevator you could hear that something feel off and was caught between the door panel and the tracks as it was going. It was mine that had the mishap. The both handles where broken. I filled a claim with AA and all that was offered was 5000 miles for the inconvenience. I complained about and received an e-voucher for $150. Remember, bags are to protect your contents, and they do eventually wear out. The £12 difference is minimal but you could argue it if the bag was new.
