Many thanks for the info c-w-s.
This passport was issued Jan 2016 with the ESTA September 2016 and no problem when travelling then.
I appear to be checked in using the desktop site. it's the mobile one with the weird message.
Here's hoping a smooth operation in BHD. There is a connection time of about 90 minutes in LHR.
