If you're using the multi-city booking at aa.com, it will automatically price each sector separately, which is why it came back with 100k miles required. You need to put that routing on hold at aa.com, then call AA to have it correctly priced as a single award.

And for JFK-DCA, you still have 24 hrs to connect in JFK, not 4 hrs. On an int'l itinerary you have up to 24 hrs to connect at every point, not just the foreign connections.
